studio notes #001

studio notes #001

New blog here at MIDI Mighty. Calling it Studio Notes. This is the first one.

I'm not 100% sure what it'll be but it will be a mix. A few things I think I'll touch on:

  • Product updates and products in progress
  • Details into decisions made
  • Creativity and being a creator especially in music
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Sharing interesting content on the web

The through line will always be music.

I think this will come together kind of like making a track. You start somewhere and put something down. You sketch around that, go back and forth, edit this, edit that, change this, change that, until something ultimately comes together.

This is me just starting kicking laying down a couple notes. Let's see where it goes.

A Bit More

I've been in a creative field for the past 20 years, mostly as a designer. A few years ago I started MIDI Mighty to dabble in entrepreneurship. It's been up, it's been down, and overall rewarding.

I tried many different things to grow the site, some worked, some didn't. One thing that somewhat worked is my blog on drum tips and resources.

It's good and helpful when it works, but I feel like there's only so many drum tips to go through that people want / need.

And I always had an itch to talk a bit broader about creativity. And I think that's more interesting when it comes to music production.

I stayed away from it because I wasn't sure if it was directly related to this site and wasn't sure it would help growth of the site.

But I've a bit of a new direction I'm working on. For one, I'm getting into plugins with the release of my first two FX plugins.

And second, leaning into a direction that's a but more authentic. Not that I wasn't being authentic before, but rather opening up and broadening what content I put out there. It'll draw on my creative expertise and lens from the past 20 years.  Let's see how it works.

Product Updates

I released a couple plugins recently. Mighty Drums and Mighty Delay.

Mighty Drums

Mighty Drums was made to simplify making your drums sound cohesive, present, and give them that oomph without being overpowering. It's a simple knob but does several things under the hood: saturation, EQ'ing, soft clipping, transient shaping, and saturation.

When i was a much younger producer I didn't know how to make my stuff sound good. As I got older and understood everything that goes into it, I realized, it's a lot.

So I thought, what if I could put that all in one knob. Most beatmakers want their music to sound good and hit right, but they don't want to be engineers. This is for them.

Mighty Delay

Delay's sound great. Same idea, I wanted to create a delay that does several things under the hood but is simple on top. And, makes your drums sound great by filling in the space in a rhythmic and musical way. That's what Mighty Delay does.

The idea isn't to give you all the delay parameters. It's to hide them and give you tools to focus on the feelings. The bounce you get with Mighty Delay.

I'm proud of this one, I think it gives a nice feel to your drums.

What's Next

Reverb and Saturation are two I'm working on right now. A few other ideas I'm kicking around as well.

That's studio notes #001. Thanks for reading!
