Add a Reversed Snare For Interesting Effects

Add a Reversed Snare For Interesting Effects

an easy way to add a bit of interest to your drums is to layer a reverse snare.

  1. Make a copy of the snare in your drum pattern
  2. Reverse it
  3. layer it on top of the original snare so both play at the same time

Tips

Length
Play with the length of the reversed snare. When you reverse the snare you get the build up sound (what was the tail of the original). You may want this or not. If not, simply shorten the length of the reversed snare

Sonics over Visual Alignment
Depending on the specific sound, you'll have to adjust it accordingly so it sounds right. Sometimes the two snares will line up perfectly. Sometimes it'll visually look a little misaligned, but sonically sound right. Go for what sonically sounds good to you.

Placement
You don't have to layer it on every snare it. you can do it:

  • Randomly to keep interest
  • On specific snares in each bar (like every first snare, or second snare)
  • For specific phrases - for example on only the hook, or bridge
