I try to stay on top of new VSTs and plugins that come out. Came across one I thought was cool. It was touted as:
"trusted by top producers"
and used by
diamond, platinum, & gold producers. And Billboard charting produces.
"innovative tool' that is a grammy winning producer's "secret sauce".
I downloaded this plugin and it was trash.
Look, I don't want to bash people trying to build a business in this space. It's hard. And building software is hard. I won't name the tool or the creator.
But when the tool barely works.
When the UX is...wonky, confusing, and doesn't meet basic levels of quality.
When it doesn't even do what it's supposed to do.
It's riddled with bugs, painstaking to use, and completely takes you out of the music production flow...
I can't help but look at these reviews and testimonials and see what they are: paid for and not authentic.
I'm guessing some sort of "hey man can you say something good about my new plugin, I got you with [some form of payment]" type situation.
Unfortunately it's not a unique story. Many products out there have fake reviews, buy reviews, or "favor-for-a-favor" reviews. Or there's just scammers out there who know how to game the system.
MIDI Mighty has authentic reviews. We used Judge.Me which authenticates the reviews and, encourages stores to be open and honest, and scores stores on that authenticity.
It won't always look pretty, perfect, and glitter - but that's what makes it authentic and real.
