Studio Notes #005 // Short On Time

Don't Overthink It

One thing I learned from building this business is it's easy to overthink every decision. Sometimes you need to just make a decision and go.

I'm about to ship Mighty Drum Machine and I needed a logo. It's been in the back of my head for weeks and I was low key stressing about it.

I was able to push it off because there was so much else to do. But then Monday morning came and it's one of the last things on my ToDoist before I ship.

I was thinking about it the night before and I loved the idea of some icon to represent it. But I couldn't think of one. Maybe I'll just do an "M "and a place holder and move on.

I also didn't have much time. A self-imposed deadline, but a deadline nonetheless.

I was watching footage from Jay-Z's concert and he ended it with fireworks. Those fireworks took the shape of Basquiat's crown.

And boom, I said there it. One, I love Jay-z and he's iconic when it comes to hiphop. 2) I love the symbolism behind Basquiat's crown. 3) Crowns have been a theme throughout hiphop. 4) As a bonus, Jay and Basquiat are broth from Brooklyn and Basquiat's grave is literally in the same neighborhood of Brooklyn as I am, and where my studio is (Green-Wood).

I'll do a Basquiat inspired crown....and there's probably a way to get the M in there (also a W as I flirt with a name change to Made With Mighty).

I did some sketches:

and did some mockups:

and I ended up here:

I think a lot about bridging the digital and analog world and this has some analog feel to it. There's hidden M's, and the squares make sense since that's all throughout Mighty Drum Machine.

The Beginning

I see this as a first version and I'm excited to see how it evolves over time. Sometimes you just gotta go with something and iterate it over time. Not everything has to be perfect right out the gate.

Just as this business is changing and growing over time, the logo will too.

5 Minutes

9th on X/twitter on his "Girls" beat he did for Destiny's Child, "A beat I literally made in 5 minutes."

You don't always need to spend hours and hours of time, sometimes it just works from the get go.

3 Days 3 Concerts

We can use more Jay-Z concerts.
